The first expert mission on “Emergency Preparedness and Response to Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies” to the new International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Member States of the Caribbean took place in Guyana in August. The mission, jointly organised by the IAEA and the Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) aimed to assist Guyana in the development of national capabilities to respond to radiological emergencies, including the outline of actions to prepare a draft national radiation emergency plan. In August, the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) along with the Ministry of Public Security hosted a national roundtable event to present Guyana with its UNSCR 1540 National Legal Study and highlight to national authorities its key findings and recommendations. The National Legal Study analysed Guyana’s existing legislative framework against the operative paragraphs of UNSCR 1540 and will be one of the key documents relied upon in assisting Guyana in identifying what needs, challenges and areas exist for strengthening the implementation of the resolution within the Guyanese context. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) hosted a workshop in August, 2017 to validate the draft Gender Strategy that will be incorporated in the implementation of two existing projects and another project in the pipeline. Twenty-three (23) persons representing the Ministry of Agriculture and its allied agencies, the Ministry of Social Protection, the Gender Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Communities, Civil Defense Commission, Office of Climate Change and the Guyana Red Cross Society participated in the two-day event.
