Although little research has been conducted on sexual violence throughout the world, available data suggest that in some countries nearly one in four women may experience sexual violence by an intimate partner. About one-third of adolescent girls report their first sexual experience as being forced. Sexual violence is known to have a profound impact on physical and mental health. The International Labour Organization, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Protection, on conducted a two-day seminar on October 4th and 5th which saw twenty-five participants from differing fields of work within the informal work economy join in a Training of Trainers’ Seminar. Funded by the World Bank, the Education Ministry on Wednesday afternoon launched the Guyana Education Sector Improvement Project. The project aims to improve teaching practices and student achievement in mathematics at the primary level in selected schools, strengthen the teaching capacity and improve the learning environment of the University of Guyana (UG) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS).
