Guyana and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

The clock is ticking towards the 2015 deadline for the achievement of the  MDGs. So let’s look at what Guyana has achieved so far:



MDG Goal 1

Achievements/Progress to 2015

Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger

  • Met internationally-established targets in fight against hunger
  • Halved the proportion of people who suffer from hunger
  • Reduction of prevalence of undernourishment from 19.1% (1990-1992) to 5.1% (2010-2012)
  • Reduction in absolute number of undernourished persons
  • Malnutrition in children under 5 has decreased
  • Proportion of persons living in extreme poverty declined from 28.7% (1993) to 18.6% (2006)


MDG Goal 2

Achievements/Progress to 2015

Achieve universal primary education

  • On track to achieving Universal Primary Education
  • Gender parity in education
  • Average attendance in primary school is 74%


MDG Goal 3

Achievements/Progress to 2015

Promote gender equality and empower women

  • Progress in the area of gender equality
  • Gender Parity
  • Passed the Domestic Violence Act (1996); and Sexual Violence Act (2010)


MDG Goal 4

Achievements/Progress to 2015

Reduce child mortality

  • This MDG was achieved by 2008. Data shows that  under-five mortality declined from 120 per 1,000 live births in 1991, to 17 per  1,000 live births in 2008


MDG Goal 5

Achievements/Progress to 2015

Improve maternal health

  • Decreased maternal mortality ratio from 320 per 100,000 live births in 1991 to 86 per 100,000 live births in 2008
  • Contraceptive prevalence rate has increased from 32% to 46%
  • A 2010 assessment of health facilities to ascertain issues, identify gaps and upgrades needed to improve the capacity of facilities to provide emergency obstetric and newborn care


MDG Goal 6

Achievements/Progress to 2015


  • Guyana achieved universal coverage in anti-retroviral treatment (more than 80 % of people in need accessing the drugs
  • Guyana is about to eliminate mother to child HIV transmission
  • Mortality due to AIDS has dropped from 9.4% to 3.6% in the last ten years
  • AIDS cases have dropped, but the number of HIV infections remained the same for the last ten years


MDG Goal 7


Ensure environmental sustainability

  • Guyana has been making significant strides in environmental sustainability; through the Low Carbon Development Strategy, a range of programmes have been implemented targeting the conservation and management of the country’s natural resources
  • Guyana – while susceptible to the impact of climate change, over the years, several targeted interventions to mitigate against its effect have been implemented
  • Guyana has met safe drinking water targets


MDG Goal 8


Global Partnership for Development

  • The United Nations agencies are fully aligned with the national development processes of Guyana. They were developed in a participatory manner which assures that they are responsive to national needs.
  • Through partnerships, capacity building has been strengthened for broad cross section of government and NGO stakeholders.
  • Partnering with other governments and other international development agencies in implementing MDGs 1 through 7
