On Friday, 24th December, 2017 the UN System in Guyana participated in the Ministry of Social Protection’s ceremony and exhibition to launch the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence in Albion, Berbice (Region 5).
During the ceremony, UN Resident Coordinator, Mikiko Tanaka delivered the message of Secretary-General António Guterres. In her remarks, UNICEF Guyana Education Specialist, Audrey Michele Rodrigues noted that efforts to End Violence Against Women and Girls can be supported by encouraging dialogue and healthy debate, supporting advocacy around both violence prevention and response, building partnerships, reforming the education system, leaving no one out, and becoming our own champions of change.
Additional remarks were given by Hon. Amna Ally, Minister of Social Protection and other Government officials while community representatives made pledges to support efforts to End Gender Based Violence. Also, there were several dramatic presentations highlighting issues related to Gender Based Violence.
The ceremony was followed by an exhibition which saw participation from non-governmental organisations, University and high school students, and residents.
