Eradication of Hunger and Improving Food and Nutrition Security

"All people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life."

This definition of food and nutrition security, from the 1996 World Food Summit, embodies four major pillars food availability, food accessibility, food consumption and stability of the first three pillars.

 

Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO's work: to ensure that people have regular access to enough high quality food to lead active healthy lives. Over the past year FAO continued its support to Guyana's food security agenda.

In 2012, FAO conducted a survey of meals, menus and food preparation which were provided by school vendors and operators of school canteens in secondary schools in Georgetown. As a result of this survey, a number of areas for improvement were identified, and training was conducted with the aim of enhancing both food and nutrition security, improving nutritional content of meals, and substitution of some ingredients with healthy alternatives.

Training for thirty five vendors was conducted by the Carnegie School of Home Economics and the Ministry of Health. In particular, vendors and operators were trained in simple ways to improve the nutrition content of meals which they usually made, by substituting some ingredients with healthy alternatives, such as watermelon and black eye peas. Armed with these new skills, these school vendors and operators will prepare safe and nutritious food which meets dietary needs and food preference for active and healthy lives of school children. FAO also engaged in plans for the publishing of a Cook Book of healthy school lunches.
