In observance of World AIDS Day 2017, under the theme – Right to Health - the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) collaborated with government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to host three (3) activities: the annual Awareness Walk and Inter-Faith Service, the annual dramatic production – Flame and the Ribbon, and a Roundtable on Gender Based Violence and HIV. These activities were held on November 25, December 1, and December 5 respectively. Members of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Youth Advisory Group (YAG) were trained to advocate in areas of Gender Based Violence, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, Sexual Violence, Gender Equality, the UNFPA 2018-2021 Strategic Plan, among other topics, at a workshop held on December 9, 2017 in observance of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. The sessions were facilitated by staff from UNFPA's Suriname Liaison Office, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Ministry of Social Protection, and the Ministry of Public Health.

On Friday, 24th December, 2017 the UN System in Guyana participated in the Ministry of Social Protection’s ceremony and exhibition to launch the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence in Albion, Berbice (Region 5). During the ceremony, UN Resident Coordinator, Mikiko Tanaka delivered the message of Secretary-General António Guterres.
